Stay safe when training

A local security company urges people to stay safe while training for their next big marathon or cycling event.

SAFETY should be part of any training plan for big events like the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the Two Oceans Marathon or any of the Parkrun events happening across the country.

Ivan Govender, district manager (KwaZulu-Natal) for ADT Security, said: “Our roads are very busy this time of year with cyclists and runners making use of the favourable weather conditions to get into shape. My wish is that every single person is able to enjoy their workout in safety.”

He said a very good place to start with one’s safety routine is by making sure another person is aware of the route you will be taking and your expected time of return. In this way, they can quickly raise the alarm in case something goes wrong.

“Visibility is another very important aspect. Wearing reflective clothing ensures you are visible to other road users,” said Govender.

There is safety in numbers, and Govender recommends strongly against running or cycling alone but rather to join a group of people who can look out for your safety and also offer encouragement along the way.

Govender said there are other tips that he can also recommend such as making sure your cellphone is properly charged so that you are able to call for help in case of an emergency and not using the same training route every day.

“Varying the route makes it difficult for any would-be criminal to anticipate your movements, while the change in scenery can also keep the physical exertion interesting. Leave the headphones at home. It is better to remain aware of your surroundings at all times so that you can hear any oncoming vehicles or other potential risks to your safety,” he said.

Govender said you should take along enough money to be able to catch a bus or a taxi or even make a phone call from a payphone, if need be, and if you have an alarm system at home, remember to activate it before leaving for your training ride. Lock all the doors and gates, so that your loved ones can be safe while they wait for your return.

“Cycling groups such as the Pedal Power Association have put together very important safe cycling tips,” said Govender. Visit: www.pedalpower.org.za for advice.
