DPHS learners show some heart

More than R20 000 was raised for Umduduzi - Hospice Care for Children by eight local school learners.

EIGHT DPHS learners swam the aQuelle Midmar Mile on Saturday to raise funds for Umduduzi – Hospice Care for Children.

Michael Thornton, Stefan Swart, Luke Rowe, Matt Hayes, Angus Arrow, Jack Hampson, Jedd Poovan and Travis Arrow decided they would like to swim the Midmar Mile to promote a cause that is very close to their hearts and one they really believed in.

The boys created a fundraising page entitled DPHS's Heart Miles, where they appealed to friends and family to support them by donating funds towards their swim, which they would hand over to Dr Julia Ambler and Tracey Brand from Umduduzi after the event. Their target was R20 000 and they were excited to raise R23 672.

The boys thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of the swim for a cause which was so close to their hearts, as they have recently lost a friend to cancer.

Umduduzi – Hospice Care for Children does work in paediatric palliative care. They help terminally-ill children die with dignity and without undue suffering, and also support the families through such incredible loss.

“We are overwhelmed by the boys' determination and willingness to get involved and raise funds for Umduduzi. It is always exciting to see the open giving hearts of children doing something for other children in need and the way this prompts their friends and family into action,” said Dr Ambler.
