DUT student receives funding

The student will be granted financial support which will include tuition fees and prescribed study materials for this academic year.

THE Media, Information and Communications Technologies Seta (MICT Seta), has granted financial support to Mthetheleli Gwaza, a second year student at the Durban University Technology. The much needed support comes after the Berea Mail published an article about the plight of the Public Relations and Communications student who had been stranded with no place to stay and no food to eat, despite him having achieved six distinctions and an average of 65 per cent in all his subjects.

A letter sent by MICT Seta to the student stated: “The student will be granted financial support which will include tuition fees and prescribed study materials for this academic year. This will take effect in the new financial year, starting from 1 April.”

The student is currently being housed with other students at a temporary residence by the school until their accommodation issues have been addressed. Gwaza said, “This is the best news ever. I am happy that I can now continue with my studies. All that's left now is for me to secure funding for my accommodation.”

Meanwhile, a week ago the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) said more than 160,000 students have already received tertiary education funding. The schemed vowed that no deserving students will be turned away. Applications for financial assistance increased this year after a deadline was extended and it now funds more than 400,000 university-goers a year. NSFAS has already paid R1.3 billion to 26 universities nationwide to cover the registration of students.
