Seven injured in Umbilo Road collision

The taxi driver was trapped in the vehicle and the Durban Fire Department used the jaws of life to free him.

SEVEN people were injured when a bus and a taxi collided on Umbilo Road near Chestnut Road on Monday evening.

According to Garrith Jamieson from Rescue Care, paramedics responded to the call just after 11pm.

“On their arrival, they found that a bus and a taxi had collided in the roadway before the taxi veered off the road and crashed into a fence on the roadside. The taxi driver was found to be entrapped and the Durban Fire Department was called to assist. They had to use the jaws of life to free the man,” he said.

Jamieson said six passengers in the taxi had also sustained various injuries and were stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital.

“At this stage the exact cause of the collision is unknown however Umbilo SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further,” said Jamieson.
