Umbilo armed robbery suspects sought

The community is urged to refrain from withdrawing large amounts of cash but rather use EFTs.

UMBILO police is appealing to the community not to withdraw large amounts of money from ATMs. This comes after three cases of armed robbery were opened at the station this week.

According to Capt Nqobile Gwala from provincial SAPS, on 27 January at about noon, a 48-year-old woman and her daughter were allegedly accosted by six unknown suspects at Meller Crescent, Umbilo who robbed them of cash and two bags with their belongings at gunpoint.

“Victims were robbed of cash after they withdrew and exited the bank,” she said.

In a second incident in Glenwood at 2.10pm on Monday, 30 January, two men withdrew a large amount of cash from a bank in Musgrave and placed it in their car boot. When they parked at Mc Donald Lodge in Glenwood, where they were guests, they noticed a white Audi parked behind them.

“Three men got out of the Audi wearing balaclavas and wielding guns, however the other two men got out of their car and shot at them. They returned fire, then got in the Audi and drove away. No one was injured,” said Capt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS.

She said in the third incident at 1.50pm on Monday, 30 January, a man and his son had withdrawn a large amount of money from a bank in Davenport.

“When parking, three armed men in a white Chev (ND 2155917) approached them and pointed a gun at the father and demanded cash. The men instructed them to get out of the car. They searched the car and took the cash, watch, cellphones and car keys,” said Makaula.

She said anyone with information on the suspects is urged to contact Umbilo police on 031 203 2407 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

“The community is urged to refrain from withdrawing large amounts of cash but rather use electronic transfers. If you suspect any vehicle is following you, drive to your nearest place of safety or police station,” said Makaula.
