Fed up residents want rubble cleared

"The unsightly, unpleasant and unhealthy rubble lying outside of our properties for nigh on six months is unacceptable."

DESPITE months of complaining relevant authorities, residents in Peter Mokaba Road are still waiting for a pile of rubble alongside the pavement and down an embankment on the road to be removed.

In October 2016, Berea Mail published an article about the rubble that had raised the concerns of local residents. To date, the rubble has still not been cleared.

“The only difference is that with summer here, the rubble is now covered by more vegetation making it impossible for vehicles to park along the road, and a walking hazard has been created. The unsightly, unpleasant and unhealthy rubble lying outside our properties for nigh on six months is unacceptable. There surely must have been one day in this period of time that it could have been removed,” said resident, Robbie Burns.

Burns also pointed out how overgrown vegetation was hampering the line of sight for drivers as they approached the intersection of Burman Drive and Peter Mokaba Road. Burns said drivers could not see around the corner because of the overgrowth and he was concerned an accident could occur.

“There have been no attempts to attend to the road issues previously brought to the attention of eThekwini,” he said.

Another resident, Jill van den Berg, said she would not be happy until the rubble down the bank was cleared and the pavement levelled and paved or cinder packed to enable people to be able to park outside the blocks of flats on Peter Mokaba Road.

Speaking about other issues in the road and immediate surroundings, resident, Wendy Harper, said: “How many more people do we ratepayers have to contact in order to get some decent service for our hard-earned money! And how much longer must we put up with being shunted from pillar to post in order to obtain the service? Despite all my previous emails sent to various officials regarding the potholes in Burman Drive, only one pothole was filled. Burman Drive is becoming a ‘dodgem’ road for drivers, with all the deep cracks and potholes, which are steadily getting worse with each rainfall. This erosion is also as a result of the additional traffic it now has to carry, as many residents and visitors prefer not to use Peter Mokaba Road (North), due to that being in such a shocking state.”

Responding to queries for comment on the problem, ward councillor Martin Meyer and DA whip for Human Settlements and Infrastructure, said he was aware the matter had been outstanding for some time and had contacted the relevant department to have it addressed.
