Councillor demands action to crack down on illegal parking

Tembe said the issue of trucks parking illegally in Franks Road depicts the larger issue of what is going on in and around Umbilo.

DRIVERS of heavy duty trucks who illegally park in Umbilo and Glenwood suburbs must be taken to task. So says ward 33 councillor, Mmabatho Tembe, after another complaint was received about heavies parked on Franks Road, a narrow residential road in Umbilo.

According to a resident living nearby the trucks blocking the view of oncoming traffic if motorists are approaching from Umbilo Road.

Tembe said the issue in Franks Road depicted the larger issue of what was going on in and around Umbilo.

“This problem dates back to former councillor Warwick Chapman’s days and something needs to be done. More businesses have sprung up in the area which has resulted in an influx of trucks into residential areas. There is no adequate truck stop in the area and drivers park anywhere,” she said.

While this was annoying for residents, she said it was also detrimental to infrastructure as the roads were not built to carry heavy duty vehicles.

“Metro Police has tried to issue fines but this is hard to enforce. I believe something needs to be done on a larger scale. The community can’t complain any more than it already has. I think another meeting needs to be held with eThekwini Transport Authority to come up with a more sustainable solution,” she said.
