Security officer’s bravery leads to arrest

Security guard apprehends suspects in attempted house breaking.

A security guard’s act of bravery led to the arrest of a suspected thief. ADT Security Guard, Zithembe Thobela was on duty in Blackhurst Avenue when a resident approached him to advise that as he has arrived home, he witnessed two men attempting to break into his home via a sliding burglar bar fitted to one of his doors . Officer Thobela immediately contacted the Control Room and requested armed response back up.

After the two suspects were identified by the resident, they attempted to flee in different directions but Officer Thobela successfully apprehended one of the suspects. Armed response arrived and handed the suspect over for arrest to members of the Berea SAPS.

The security company’s Community Development Manager, Dan Maharaj commended the resident for reporting the suspects to the guard straight away and praised Officer Thobela for his bravery.

“Should you come across a suspect on your property, remain calm and immediately contact your security service provider or the South African Police Service. Never confront them or attempt to capture the suspects because they may be armed and dangerous. I am proud of the officer’s courageousness which ensured that the criminal has now been placed behind bars.” he said.

He advised residents to regularly test their alarm systems and to ensure that windows and doors, including garage doors, are properly closed and secured. “I urge the general public to request a security assessment with their respective security providers to ensure that they are safely protected, and that the best and most up to date technologies are in use.”
