Students warned not to fall victim to registration scam

The alert comes after a few cases were reported last week by registering students.

THE Berea Police Station has issued an alert, to prospective students of the Durban University of Technology to be aware of registration scams. The alert comes after a few cases were reported in the last week by students registering to study at the universities who were scammed.

Captain PN Naidoo of the Berea SAPS said students had no other way of registering at university other than by following the process for registration.

“Do not let anyone deceive you that they can short circuit the process and in return for payment. When paying registration fees, it must be paid only to the university’s cash office where you will get a receipt for the money paid. No payment must be paid to anyone else because no one is tasked by the university to accept payment,” he said.

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old male was arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen property and detained at the Berea Police Station.

“Police were patrolling along John Zikhali (Sydenham) Road and noticed a suspicious male. The police stopped and searched the suspect and found a GPS, the holder and the charger in his possession. He was asked where he got the property from and he claimed to have found it in the bin. The property was still in a good working condition and he had all the components for it.” said Captain Naidoo.
