Peter Mokaba crash prompts councillor to call for traffic calming

Councillor Chris Pappas is to call meeting on traffic calming following a collision earlier today.

A DRIVER of a vehicle was transported to hospital after colliding with a stationary vehicle on Peter Mokaba Road this afternoon.

Reports indicate the driver approached the rise in the road and collided with a stationary vehicle parked in the road. He was unable to stop in time. His vehicle overturned.

Commenting on the incident, residents said something needed to be done to stop cars parking on the road at that particular spot as it was a high accident area. A resident requested that ward councillor, Chris Pappas investigate if yellow or red lines could be painted at the site of this accident, outside Excelsior Court.

Pappas agreed that there was a serious need for speed calming measures.

“A study at the end of last year came back and said that the road did not qualify for speed bumps or other traffic calming. I will be calling a public meeting with the municipality on the issue. It is important that as many people as possible attend that meeting so this matter can be taken seriously,” he said.

He said Silverton Road, Peter Mokaba Road and Stephen Dlamini Road were  major concerns at present.

“Our suburbs are not highways. I hope the community will support this initiative,” he said.
