Umalusi approves 2016 exam results

The Department of Basic Education will release the final marks on the 4th of January 2017.

THE release of the 2016 matric exam results has been approved by the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, Umalusi.

At a media briefing today, Umalusi chairperson, John Volmink said it was satisfied the exams were valid despite the fact that a maths paper had been leaked, and a limited number of groups were found to have copied each others’ work.

Volmink said after 58 subjects were moderated, raw marks had been accepted for 26 subjects. Upward shifts were made on 28 subjects and downward shifts were affected on the remaining four subjects.
He said marks for Physical Science had not been adjusted in any way, and this also applied to the subjects of History, English, African languages and Afrikaans.
He added that the progress that had been expected in home languages did not materialise, but the overall learner performance had improved.
With regards to those involved in the leaking of the Maths 2 paper and subsequent group copying, Volmink said swift action needed to be taken against them. He said investigations into the leak by the Hawks, SAPS and Education department showed that the leak had affected about 100 learners.

Umalusi confirmed that the Department of Basic Education will release the final marks on the 4th of January 2017.
