The KZN Provincial Task Team secured 14 terms of life imprisonment in 2016.

THE Provincial Task Team, Specific Crimes, Serious and Violent Crime in KwaZulu-Natal secured 14 terms of life imprisonment as well as a total of 583 years imprisonment in 33 cases it successfully investigated this year.

According to Brigadier Jay Naicker, provincial SAPS spokesperson, during 2016 the team arrested a total of 55 suspects for various high profile cases such as armed robbery, murder, house robbery, theft, carjacking, business robbery and fraud.

“During the same period, the accused were convicted and sentenced by the various courts in the province after they were found guilty of the offences they had committed. The 55 arrested and convicted were linked to 33 cases the team was investigating. Those that were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment were charged with murder,” he said.

The Provincial Task Team investigates high profile cases across the province including the policing precincts of Durban Central, Umbilo, KwaNdengezi, Marianhill, Amanzimtoti, Ixopo, Eshowe, Umlazi, Nqutu and Wentworth.

KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, congratulated the team of detectives for their sterling work.

“We are pleased that we have such a team in the province who we can always rely on when we have high profile, serious and violent crimes within the province. These sentences are a clear indication that we have a very reliable capacity to deal with violent criminals in this province,” he said.
