SANBS wants your blood!

SANBS is appealing for more blood donors, as blood collections are decreasing drastically.

THEY want your blood! The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is encouraging the public to donate blood at the Musgrave Donor Clinic.

According to Mohamed Goolam from SANBS, blood collections have dropped drastically and an urgent appeal is being made to the local community to donate a pint of life-giving blood.

At the time of publication, the SANBS only had enough blood stocks to last 3.4 days. The organisation is slowly running out of the following blood types, A+, A- (that is at 75 per cent capacity), B+, B-, O+ and O- (that is at 70 per cent capacity).

Less than one per cent of South Africans are active donors, and unfortunately a unit of blood only lasts for 42 days after the donation.

It is for this reason that the organisation urges people to donate regularly. Donors can give blood as often as every eight weeks. One unit can save the lives of up to three people.

Musgrave Donor Centre is at 29 Musgrave Road, next to the Berea Congregational Church, Pardy Gardens Road.

Working hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8.30am to 4.30pm, Tuesday 10am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 2pm.
