Acclaimed trail runner joins uMhlanga’s trail event

Top runners will compete in the uMhlanga Trail Run on Sunday.

INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed trail runner, Ryan Sandes, will join runners in the uMhlanga’s Trail Run on Sunday 18 December, one of the main events in this year’s uMhlanga Summer Festival.

Sandes, who is in town for a book signing of his recently launched book, Trail Blazer at the Gateway Salomon store on Saturday between 10am and noon, will be taking to the local trails for fun. The 34-year-old trail running sensation has notched up an impressive variety of awards, and also is the first person to ever win an ultra-trail race on all seven continents.

Considered one of the world’s leading ultra-trail runners, Sandes will be joining trailers as he competes for fun in the longer 18km event on Sunday.

The epic adventurer stated: “I will be taking the run easy and running mid-pack as I have taken a bit of break from training the past few weeks.”

Vaughn Smit, one of the coordinators for the event said: “It is fantastic not only for our event, but for runners to be able to say they blazed the same trail that Ryan did. He is a legend off-road and we are delighted that he will be joining us this weekend!”

The distances that keen participants can tackle are the challenging 12km or 18km and for the entry level runners, the shorter 5km race. The first race gets underway at 6am, with the two longer races setting off, and the shorter race having an individual start ten minutes later. All distances will have a river crossing and a section on the beach. The race takes you out and back on an adventurous trail through the wooded areas around the suburbs of uMhlanga. The start and finish is along the promenade near the Millennium Stage.

There will be two water tables on the 18km, one on the 12km route and another one placed at the finish for all runners. Podium finishers will be rewarded with prize money.

Entry fees are R140 for 18km, R120 for 12km and R70 for the 5km for all online entries. Online entries close on Thursday 15 December. Late entries are R160 for 18km, R140 for 12km and R90 for 5km. Parking is available along Lagoon Drive.
