Police intervention needed as crime surges

Councillor Chris Pappas is appealing to the police to help curb the crime in ward 31.

A sudden surge in crime in the areas of Musgrave, Sydenham, Overport and Asherville has prompted councillor Chris Pappas, to appeal for urgent police intervention.

Councillor Pappas contacted Mayville SAPS, Berea SAPS, Saydenham SAPS and Durban Metro Police, following a number of crime related incidents in the area.

“This week alone there have been a dozen cars stolen, a number of shops and retail outlets robbed, an increase in house-breakings and generally more reports of suspicious behaviour than in previous weeks,” he said.

He said he had noticed an increase in crime related incidents in Moses Kotane Road, the area around Lacey Road informal settlement, Georgehill Road, including abandoned buildings and an informal settlement, Stephen Dlamini Road, the area around The Atrium in Overport, homes close to the highway from Tollgate Bridge up to 45th Cutting, the area known as Palm Ridge, from Brickfield Road to Peter Mokaba Road. He said Musgrave has been a hotspot for the theft of motor vehicles while abandoned buildings at 163 East Street and the intersection of Tarndale Road and Dunnotar Road are also a concern.

“We have now hit the festive season and with that people are more susceptible to becoming victims of crime. Criminals themselves have become more brazen and are attacking our community in plain sight,” said Pappas.
