Volunteers needed for literacy programme

The Shining Stars programme has grown from just five volunteers to almost double however, with it they have noticed a need for more grade two and three children to benefit from the programme.

SHINING Stars at Sherwood Primary are sharing a love for reading and an increase in academic performance to the children enrolled in the school’s literacy programme.

According to Saras Klausli and Jackie Steen who together brought the programme, part of the Shine Literacy Chapter to the school, they have had such amazing results that they would love to extend the programme to more learners, so volunteers are needed.

“At the moment we have mainly retirees, some volunteers do have a teaching background, but it isn’t necessary. All you need is a love of children and one or two spare hours a week,” Klausli said.

Klausli retired in 2012 and was looking for a place to do some volunteer work when she heard about the Shine Literacy NPO and its work to improve literacy for young children around the country.

“I joined the Sunshine Kids based at Clarence Primary in Morningside where I spent a fulfilling year and felt there was a huge need for this service at many schools. I decided to start a programme with Jackie here at Sherwood,” she explained.

The Shining Stars programme has grown from just five volunteers to almost double however, with it they have noticed a need for more grade two and three children to benefit from the programme. “It’s absolutely rewarding when we see the children develop from shy and timid when they start, to growing in confidence and so articulate after a short while,” she said.

A volunteer, Neville Tucker said, he enjoyed volunteering and found it “hugely rewarding.”

Dean Unger principal at the school said the support of the Shining Stars team was treasured. “They make such a huge difference and we are seeing the children blossom. It’s not about just reading but their confidence levels are also boosted.”

They operate at Sherwood Primary on Tuesdays and Thursdays with two sessions, 9.15am -10.15am and 10.45am to 11.45am. Volunteers can choose to assist one or both sessions. Contact Saras if you would like to get involved on 0731874800.
