City opts to run MM Stadium as a business

Moses Mabhida Stadium is to operate as a Municipal business unit that will be established under the Municipal Structures Act.

MOSES Mabhida Stadium is to operate as a municipal business unit under which the 2010 legacy stadia such as King Zwelithini, Sugar Ray Xulu and Princess Magogo will fall.

The decision, to run the stadium as a business unit was made by the city’s Portfolio Committee on Community Services, chaired by Councillor Zama Sokhabase,

At the meeting, the Committee recommended that Moses Mabhida Stadium (MMS) operate as a municipal business unit that will be established under the Municipal Structures Act, Section 76(a), however that it be ring-fenced to achieve operational efficiency through specific delegation and authorities.

Sokhabase said the advantages of this model meant that there would be no need to develop any new or separate policies, and that the existing Council policies would be adopted.

She said the transition would be quick and relatively smooth.

Earlier this year, eThekwini Council was presented with a proposal to integrate Moses Mabhida Stadium uder the International Concention Centre. The matter was referred back to the Committee for further discussions. Having considered all the business models, the Committee resolved that the stadium operate as a municipal business unit that will also take over all the 2010 legacy stadia,” Sokhabase explained.
