Woman (25) gang raped at UKZN residence

While South Africa gears up for the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse campaign, a young woman was gang raped in a Durban University residence.

A YOUNG woman was allegedly raped by seven men at a University of KwaZulu-Natal residence last week. Umbilo police communications officer, Captain Pumzile Makaula, said the incident occurred last Thursday night.

“The 25-year-old woman alleges she was picked up in Glenwood around 11.30pm in a grey car full of young men and taken to the residence. The victim said the men swiped a card to get her into the building and took her into one of the rooms where the seven suspects allegedly took turns to rape her,” she explained.

Makaula said the victim alleged that the men took R600 in cash from her and dropped her off in Morningside.

“This is a serious case and disappointing as we come closer to the 16 Days of Activism against Women and Child Abuse,” she said.

Berea Mail is awaiting comment from the university.
