Scout earns highest award

Local scout, Kailin Muthen, has received his Springbok badge.

LOCAL scout, Kailin Muthen, was proud to receive his Springbok badge at a group awards evening on 4 November.

Kailin and a group of fellow scouts undertook a 30km city hike from Tongaat toll plaza to Moses Mabhida Stadium earlier this year as part of Kailin’s attempts to earn his Springbok badge.

“This was my final badge, and the hike was one of the projects I had to do towards the badge. There were certain requirements by the Scouting Body for the hike and there was also paperwork which needed to be submitted after the hike,” he said.

“It took me four weeks to put it all together, and this was a culmination of all my projects, which I consider a final test towards getting my Springbok badge. I’ve been part of 4th Durban Scouting Group for the past seven years, and this was a good way to end this chapter,” he said.

Kailin joined scouts when he was 11 years old. “I had family members who were scouts, and it was a different way to escape being at home. I have learnt a lot of skills!” he said.

Kailin is currently writing matric at Durban High School, so he will have achieved two great things during this month, completing his 12 years of school as well as reaching the pinnacle of his scouting career.
