Walkers put best foot forward for Diabetes

More than 1000 Durbanites stepped out to support the Diabetes 5km walk on Sunday.

THE annual 2016 Diabetes 5km Walk SA – Durban was a huge success on Sunday.

Participants set off from the Lower Marine Parade Amphitheatre at the Bay of Plenty and included babies in prams, people in wheelchairs and even a few excited dogs on leashes – with just under 1 500 people from around KZN, Durban “doing it for diabetes”.

The MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo not only offered words of encouragements to all the participants, he took part in the walk as well as the aerobics sessions after the walk.

“Even though World Diabetes Day is celebrated annually on 14 November with the aim of raising awareness and educating people about this dreaded disease, its complications and the care that people with this condition need, we encourage the public to show more interest in monitoring their health, fitness and diet irrespective of the date being observed,” said Jenny Russell, the branch manager at Diabetes SA in Durban.
She said diabetes has been dubbed the ‘silent killer’ for years and something seriously needed to do be done about it collectively.

The day ended with loads of lucky draws after the walk and there was also a wellness expo at the amphitheatre where free blood sugar, blood pressure and kidney function checks were offered.
