‘Victim’ arrested for defeating the ends of justice

A man was arrested after claiming to be a victim of theft outside a police station.

DURBAN Central police arrested a man who claimed to be a robbery victim in the Durban CBD for defeating the ends of justice and theft.
According to Constable Zanele Khomo of Durban Central SAPS, the man reported a case of armed robbery on Sunday at Durban Central.

“It is alleged by the complainant that he was at Durban Central station on Sunday afternoon and while outside in the parking lot, he was approached by three unknown men who held him up at gunpoint. The man claimed the suspects robbed him of R55 000 and his cell phone,” she explained.

However, Khomo said when police investigated the man’s claims, detectives at the station viewed CCTV footage and discovered the evidence did not match what the complainant had claimed had happened. “The CCTV footage showed the complainant’s statement was a lie,” she said.

The 28-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday at his workplace in Chatsworth and was charged for defeating the ends of justice and theft. He is expected to appear in court soon .
