New coaches’ blood runs green

Derek Heiberg and Jeremy McLaren have been appointed as coaches for the Glenwood 1st XV in 2017.

AS one of the premier rugby playing schools in KZN, Glenwood continues to strive for excellence in the coaching of all its rugby teams from the 1st XV to the U14G team.

Structures are continually being improved and, when one coach leaves, another is ready to step into the gap. By constantly up-skilling the coaches, the impact of losing a top coach is minimised. Jeremy McLaren has been appointed as head coach for the Glenwood 1st XV in 2017 and Derek Heiberg assistant coach. They replace Rudi Dames and Mike Vowles who were the coaches in 2016.

Derek has been part of the Glenwood family since 2013, being the strength and conditioning consultant and head of physical education at the school. He has  many years of coaching experience, having been the head coach of College Rovers Rugby club 1st XV since 2014. Derek has also been appointed the director of rugby, replacing Shawn van Rensburg.

Jeremy McLaren, the current Glenwood U16A coach, also coached the KZN Craven Week Academy which won two of the three games played.

Rudi Dames has been assistant coach of the Green Machine since 2003. In 2014 he stepped into the role of head coach of the Glenwood 1st XV rugby team taking over from Sean Erasmus, who had moved on to Paarl Boys’ High. Rudi is heading to Pretoria where he will be closer to his family and take over the 1st XV Rugby Coaching position at Pretoria Boys’ High School. Rudi will be sorely missed at Glenwood by both players and supporters.

Michael Vowles who has been at Glenwood since 2014 as the assistant 1st XV Coach, moves on to the Sharks where he will be coaching the U19 team in 2017.
Shawn van Rensburg will be coaching the U16A Glenwood rugby team in 2017.
