Create a safe environment

World Cities Day 2016: Working towards a safer environment for everyone.

THE annual commemoration of World Cities Day which was commemorated on 31 October, was the perfect opportunity to redouble efforts towards creating a safe environment for everyone, says ADT Security's Ivan Govender.

The United Nations has designated 31 October every year as World Cities Day with the aim of promoting the international community’s interest in global urbanisation, to push forward cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and addressing challenges of urbanisation and contributing to sustainable urban development around the world.

“Caring for our fellow human being is a key part of creating a safe environment for ourselves and our loved ones. If we can start by just looking out for our neighbours, then half the work will be done,” said Govender, ADT’s district manager for KwaZulu-Natal.

Govender also urges communities to work with law enforcement and private security companies, and become active partners in the safety of their suburbs.

“It is simply impossible for the police and for security companies such as ADT to be everywhere, all the time. The value of the help we get from communities cannot be overstated. For those looking to start a community security group, I encourage calling on your local private security company to help with advice,” he said.

Govender said people should not walk around at night when the risks of crime might be higher and residents must make use of services offered by their security company to be met at home by a security officer, to ensure that they enter their home safely.

“Only use official public transport means which are safe and be aware of your surroundings when you are driving, especially when parked at a traffic intersection. Also, don’t leave any valuables in visible areas at home or in your vehicle,” he said.
