Citizens unite to show solidarity at protest today

Citizens will gather to demonstrate solidarity with Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, former SARS Commissioner Oupa Magashula and former Deputy Commissioner Ivan Pillay.

THE Active Citizens’ Movement (ACM) encourages the community to take part in a protest gathering at Gugu Dlamini Park (open area next to the Workshop Shopping Centre, Durban) on Wednesday, 2 November between 8am and 11am.

This is part of a nationwide initiative of concerned citizens who will gather to demonstrate solidarity with Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, former SARS Commissioner Oupa Magashula and former Deputy Commissioner Ivan Pillay on the day and time they are being tried in Pretoria.

Another aim of the gathering is to register collective outrage against the abuse and capture of state institutions to further narrow political and economic agendas.

According to Aslam Mayat, this gathering is in response to widespread public outrage against the spurious charges of fraud and theft made against the three.

“In the week after the charges were laid, the ACM has been inundated with requests to arrange a public show of support for them, and our absolute disgust at the decision by NPA head Shaun Abrahams to proceed with what every legal expert agrees are baseless charges. The public is rightly outraged at what appears to be a political agenda behind this action,” he said.

The gathering will take the form of a peaceful protest, placard demonstration and solidarity messages in support of the three.

“We appeal to all democrats committed to clean governance and an end to the abuse of state institutions to attend in their large numbers. Crispin Hemson, Paddy Kearney, Ela Gandhi and Jerry Coovadia are among many in support of this initiative,” said Mayat.
