Mugger savagely bites woman

A man was arrested for attacking and repeatedly biting a woman.

A 20-year-old Glenwood woman is recovering in a local hospital after being savagely attacked by a mugger who repeatedly bit her all over her body.

Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said an armed response officer had responded to the scene of the crime and promptly arrested the alleged attacker who was handed over to the Umbilo SAPS.

Jackson said the woman was walking along Esther Roberts (Frere) Road on her way to catch a bus to church at around 4.30pm when the robber accosted her and accused her of taking his photograph.

“She was walking along Esther Roberts Road near Glenwood Boys’ High school when he approached her and accused her of taking a photograph of him with her cellphone. He demanded to see her cellphone but she refused,” he said.

Jackson said the woman ran away from him and he gave chase and became aggressive and bit her on her neck, arm and hand.

“He started hitting her and grabbed her handbag but when she tried to fight back to get it back. He then bit on her hand leaving a nasty wound. He fled but was chased down by several bystanders who realised that he was fleeing the scene of a crime,” he said.

A Blue Security armed response officer who was patrolling the area noticed the robber running towards him followed by a crowd of people. He immediately gave chase, apprehended the suspect and recovered the woman’s handbag. Umbilo SAPS attended the scene of the crime and the suspect was taken into policy custody.

Jackson said the woman was admitted to a local hospital for treatment of her wounds.
