Berea police made some good arrests this week and Captain PN Naidoo explains why is it vital to report all crimes.

Suspect caught red handed with car radio

A 31-year-old man was arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen property when he was caught red handed with a car radio in Florida Road last Friday. According to Captain PN Naidoo, communications officer at Berea SAPS, around 3.20am an Enforce security guard was patrolling along Florida Road when he noticed a man jumping over the wall from a hotel close by. “The guard stopped the man and searched him and found he had a car radio. He called the police to assist. Our officers swiftly responded and questioned the man about the radio, but he could not give a reasonable explanation for possessing the car radio and he was arrested.

Cellphone thief arrested

Berea police arrested a 27-year-old suspected cellphone thief on Musgrave Road in the early hours of Sunday. According to Captain Naidoo, police were patrolling around 00.05am when they noticed the man. “They stopped and searched the man and discovered he had a cellphone which was switched off. The officers asked him whose cellphone it was and he said it was his, but when they asked him to switch it on he could not. An officer switched it on and dialled the last number. The person who answered the call said that the phone was just stolen and the owner is looking for it,” explained Naidoo. The man was charged for being in possession of suspected stolen property.

Be crime aware

BEREA police advise the community to exercise preventive measures, such as to avoid keeping large sums of money in homes, as criminals generally study each and every move of their targets and know their pattern of movement.

“Be vigilant at all times and if you need to move large amounts of cash, engage the services of a cash in transit company,” Captain Naidoo advised. He said motorists should be attentive when travelling to ensure they are not being followed and be wary of a White Polo with two occupants. “Immediately report any suspicious persons /vehicles in the vicinity of your neighbourhood or residence to the police. If you are confronted by criminals do not try to protect your valuables. At the end of the day your life is more important,” he added.

Tips for reporting crime

Berea SAPS communications officer, Captain PN Naidoo, explains why is it imporsant to report all crime.”If a motorist is involved in a motor vehicle collision they have 24 hours to report the incident unless there is a delay due to medical reasons. Then they can report later which is in accordance with the law. A crime can be reported if the complainant desires a case, but all crime must be reported as it is detrimental if it is not reported to the police because of statisitics and deployment of the patrol vehicles,” Naidoo explained. He added it is vital to report a crime irrespective of whether it is for insurance purposes or not. “The sooner the crime is reported the better it is for investigation as evidence can be lost if there is a delay,” Naidoo concluded.
