Nurses briefed on helicopter safety

Emergency personnel at St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban were taught about safety aspects when collecting patients from the helicopter pad.

A NETCARE 911 rescue officer and 15 Squadron held a helicopter safety briefing with the emergency personnel at Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban last week.

As the helicopter from time to time flies to the hospital with critically ill or injured patients, it was felt that is of great importance that the hospital staff that collect the patients from the helicopter pad are familiar with the dangers and safety aspects.

“The morning started in the lecture room with Konrad Jones (Netcare 911 rescue officer) giving the nursing staff a briefing around all the safety aspects and all the theory around the dangers when approaching a helicopter while the blades are still turning. After this they were taken to the helicopter pad and the pilot and engineer took the staff around the machine and showed them practically on how to approach and get in and out of the helicopter,” said Chris Botha from Netcare 911.
