MC CORD Provincial Eye Hospital celebrated World Sight Week with a record 150 planned cataract operations.

Samuel Shezi (70), from Zululand said he was very excited to come to Durban to have his troublesome cataract removed. “I am very happy, because I couldn’t see clearly through my left eye for so long,” he said laughing and chatting to nursing staff while he was in recovery after the surgery.

Zodwa Mbatha, PRO for the hospital said the hospital was close to their target of 150 cataract operations. “We normally operate on between 15 to 20 patients in a day but have increased this to at least 30 to 35 per day this week. We have local patients as well as patients referred from outlying areas. The cataract operation is a day surgery but we accommodate our patients from outlying areas for the night so their can make transport arrangements for the following morning,” she added.
