Municipality scoops award for clean audit

The eThekwini municipality was given two awards at the Clean Administration Awards ceremony this week.

THANKS to its clean audit and efficient administration, eThekwini Municipality scooped two awards at the Clean Administration Awards ceremony.

The first award was for the Most Improved Municipality with a Clean Audit and the City’s Risk Management Unit also received an accolade for subscribing to Clean Administration Processes.

The ceremony formed an important part of the Institute of Municipal Financial Officers National Conference (IMFO) that was held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre from 3 to 5 October.

The awards were handed out to recognise and applaud municipalities that have achieved clean audit outcomes.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Mayor, Councillor Fawzia Peer, said: “We have made progress in leaps and bounds in ensuring the implementation of respective austerity measures, good governance and strong political oversight. As finance officers, we must lead by example and be the custodians of our communities.”

Another major highlight of the conference was the unveiling of the organisation’s new name which will now be referred to as the Chartered Institute of Government Finance, Audit and Risk Officers (CIGFARO). The organisation is a professional body incorporating finance officials from all over South Africa. The officials engage and advice each other on financial accounting and standards and controls in public finance and governance.

Congratulating the award recipients, CIGFARO president, Jane Masite said: “We are celebrating the achievements of municipalities that have drastically improved in terms of audit outcomes. It indicates that the future is brighter and that we must do more with the little that we have.”
