Point SAPS appeal to visitors to be aware

Point police encourage visitors in the area over the school holidays to be mindful of a few safety tips.

POINT police has appealed to the public visiting the Point area during the school holiday season to take note of these SAPS safety warning tips.

According to Captain BJ Simelane, Point SAPS communications officer, many theft out of motor vehicle and theft of motor vehicle cases have been reported in The Point area and the police are trying to ensure visitors take the necessary safety precautions:

1. Do not advertise your personal belongings inside vehicle, such as handbags, cellphones, wallet, camera etc exposed in the car.

2. Avoid parking motor vehicles where there are no security officers or car guards.

3. Do not leave your firearms in the vehicle.

4. Make sure all doors and windows are properly locked when parking your car.

5. If in doubt about the safety of an area, phone the local police station for advice.

6. Always close your windows when driving in the city centre so that smash and grabs can be reduced.

Simelane further expressed that the Point SAPS detectives achieved good convictions and sentencing in a recent kidnapping case, where the suspect was sentenced to six years imprisonment of which two years were suspended for five years. “The other suspect in a case of attempted robbery was sentenced to eight years imprisonment, thanks to the efficient work and well prepared docket presented in court by detective constables Mazeka and Sabelo,” he added.
