Clifton inducts new Interact president

Clifton College recently inducted a new Interact president to the school's club.

THE 91-year-old Rotary Club of Durban has become the mother club to the Interact club of Clifton College.

At a recent presidential induction, Mpumelelo Zulu was elected the new chairman of the school’s Interact club for the coming year.

According to Assistant Governor John Johnston-Webber, there are 20 238 Interact clubs worldwide with 465 474 Interactors.

Speaking at the induction, John said: “The basic functions of an Interact club are to carry out hands on service projects, make international connections where possible, develop leadership skills and above all, to have fun. Rotary can be a career path starting with Earlyact progressing to Interact then to Rotaract and finally Rotary itself,” he said.

At the induction, outgoing president, Guy Edmondson, said he had learnt a lot during his term.

“I’ve learnt that helping in the community doesn’t have to feel like work. Week in and week out, different members of the Clifton Interact club get to not only lend a helping hand in the Durban community, but also attain valuable perspective on the diverse lives that surround us. Whether it’s through serving a warm meal at St Joseph’s Catholic Church during their weekly soup kitchens, interacting with senior citizens at TAFTA, visiting babies’ homes, or even handing out refreshments at cycle races, the young men of the Clifton Interact club have consistently displayed a genuine interest in making their mark in the broader community,” he said.

He said the Interact club had also been involved not just in interacting with the community, but by giving too.

“We’ve recently started making sleeping bags for the homeless, as well contributing to SPCA collections and Easter egg drives, and are always looking to increase the amount of Santa’s Shoeboxes we make each year. These are all activities I’ve had the privilege of participating in and leading during my time in Interact. and I have no doubt that the Interact body will continue to work passionately to make a tangible change in the world around us,” said Guy.

He congratulated the new Interact Board which comprised of exceptionally capable young men who will uphold the standards of Interact and improve the club even further.

At the induction, John congratulated President Mpumelelo Zulu and his team and said he looked forward to a successful and happy Clifton Interact year.
