Veggie garden in a bag
Keen gardeners learnt tips from activist, Coral Vinsen, at a workshop on Saturday.
AN enthusiastic group of garden enthusiasts gathered at the Green Camp in Umbilo Road to celebrate our vegetable heritage on Heritage Day.
Coral Vinsen, an 85-year-old activist, who combines vegetable gardening with chairing Amnesty in Durban, showed the varied range of visitors how to build a compost heap, how to create a bag garden and how to prepare a vegetable bed.
While others occasionally helped, or sat and looked on, Coral launched into the construction of a compost heap, using a combination of vegetable scraps, cardboard and associated plant material. She then showed how to make a garden for vegetables in a bag based in a tyre, ideal for small spaces, before finally demonstrating the way to prepare a small bed for growing vegetables.
People present signed a petition to support the continuation of the Green Camp, a centre for sustainable urban living in the heart of the commercial area.
