Community Chest receives a boost

The Community Chest benefited from the Comrades Marathon charities initiative.

THE Community Chest received a donation of more than R225 000 last week from the Comrades Charities Board.

Director, Gordon McDonald, gratefully accepted a cheque from Pat Freeman, who is on the board, and said the Community Chest would use the money to help the organisations that it assists.

The Comrades Marathon Association raised more than R4.5 million for charitable causes through the 2016 Comrades Marathon.

Other organisations which have benefited from the charity drive are the Pietermaritzburg Community Chest, PinkDrive, Sports Trust, Starfish Foundation, Wildlands and World Vision.

The Comrades charity initiative was started in 1999 as a means of giving back to South Africa's needy and to improve the social and environmental landscape. More than R24 million has been raised over the past 10 years.
