Umbilo GOCOC initiates a show of force

SAPS and Metro officers, ADT officers and members of the Umbilo Business Forum were involved in roadblocks in Umbilo on Thursday.

OFFICERS from SAPS and local private security companies joined forces for a visible policing event recently, in a move they hope will encourage local businesses and residents to support community policing efforts.

Joint roadblocks were set up on major roadways throughout the Umbilo area on Thursday 15 September and were manned by SAPS, Umbilo Business Forum (UBF) and Metro Police. They were supported by armed response officers from ADT Security.

The Snake patrol or Blitz Operation was initiated by the Umbilo Ground Operational Coordination (GOCOC) Committee which meets regularly to discuss criminal activity within the Umbilo area. These joint exercises are initiated or conducted when there is an increase in hijacking, armed robberies, business robberies as well as house burglaries within an area as a means to show force.

“The increase in criminal activities called for action from the role players and a show of force was conducted as a result. ADT is delighted to have been involved in this initiative as we believe that one of the main solutions to counter criminal activity is community involvement and collaboration amongst all stakeholders. This is a clear indication of the teamwork and synergy that exists amongst all the role players and we are satisfied with the impact which it made in the area,” said Dan Maharaj, ADT’s Community Development Manager for North Durban.
