SAPS: Refrain from taking law into your hands

Police have warned the public not to take the law into their own hands after a mob justice video of a botched Durban hijacking went viral on social media.

POLICE have appealed to the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands after an incident of a mob justice in Durban went viral on social media.

The incident, an alleged hijacking of an elderly man in Monty Naicker (Pine) Street which was thwarted by angry bystanders who tried to beat up the two suspects, was captured on camera and posted on social media.

KZN police spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Shooz Magudulela, said police had not received any report about the incident, and advised the driver to open a case at his nearest police station. “We urge the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands since it amounts to a criminal act which is punishable. When they witness crime, police must immediately be contacted for assistance,” he added.
