Pensioner assaulted by home invaders

Residents are advised to be security conscious and to ensure security gates and doors are kept locked during the day following a recent home invasion.

ARMED robbers assaulted an 86-year-old Roseglen man and his domestic worker during a home invasion in broad daylight on Tuesday.

Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said the latest incident was one of a string of serious and violent crimes committed across the city which had been reported to the company in recent weeks.

Jackson said four armed men had forced open the driveway gate of a property in Davaar Place and then entered the house through an open door at around 1.38pm.

“They held up the domestic worker and her employer at gunpoint, demanding valuables. They grabbed the domestic worker and shoved her onto the floor. One of the men placed his foot over her head and pushed her face to the ground when she started screaming,” he said.

Jackson said the men slapped the resident across his face when he did not comply with their requests to show them where they could find valuables in the house. The robbers eventually fled the scene without taking anything after a neighbour who heard the domestic worker’s screams pressed a panic button to alert the security company.

“The robbers fled in a silver grey Mercedes with no registration plates. Netcare 911 paramedics attended the scene to treat the domestic worker for her injuries. She was later transported to hospital,” he said.

Jackson advised residents to be security conscious and to ensure that security gates and doors were kept locked during the day.

“Installing an electric fence that is linked to your alarm system and an anti-gate crashing kit will provide you with an early warning system that intruders have been detected on your property. This will buy you time to press your panic alarm and to run to a safe room in your house from where you can alert the police and your security company to the emergency,” he said.
