Beach cleaners brave the rain on International Coastal Clean-up Day

Groups of volunteers cleaned up the Durban beachfront on Saturday on International Coastal Clean-Up Day.

ROXY’S Scuba School along with Christian Surfers and Ocean Stewards braved the rain on Saturday to clean up Durban’s beaches.

“The International Beach Clean Up was established by the Ocean Conservancy, which is an organisation that helps to protect the ocean and act as its voice by encouraging public to do simple things like asking your waitress to skip the straw for your drink. Efforts like that work towards a trash free ocean,” said Roxy Zunckel.

She said marine litter impacts wildlife, humans, livelihood of those who depend on the ocean for food and work, as well as the economy through tourism and recreation. These events hope to spread awareness about the importance of clean oceans.

Nikki Chapman from Christian Surfers said the group is a collective of surfers who use their love for surfing to serve one another to take the kingdom of God to the ends of the earth.

Roxy said Ocean Stewards is an organisation that promotes good marine science through guiding and educating young marine science students in their innovative programme both at sea for a hands on experience and through workshops where the students are exposed to top marine researches in their field.
“This helps to give students the knowledge they need to make wise contributions to the environment. I myself am an Ocean Steward and have learnt so much from the experiences this year!” said Roxy.
