POLICE have appealed to the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands after an incident of mob justice which was caught on camera in Durban went viral on social media.
The incident, an alleged hijacking of an elderly man in Monty Naicker (Pine) Street which was thwarted by angry bystanders who beat up the two suspects, was captured in a video which received much support on social media.
KZN police spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Shooz Magudulela, said while the police had not received any report about the incident, they advised the driver to open a case at the nearest police station. “We urge the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands since it amounts to a criminal act which is punishable. When they witness crime, police must immediately be contacted for assistance,” he added.
