Student riots force campus shutdown

UKZN has closed all campuses following protest action by students.

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal has shut down all its campuses following student protests that have seen campus buildings set alight and at Westville campus, six vehicles torched last night.

Twenty-two students were arrested at Westville campus following last night’s protests where the six cars were set alight. According to UKZN spokesperson, Lesiba Seshoka, the university  has decided to bring the spring break forward and close campuses. Students will be requested to leave all campuses and return at the end of the recess period which had been scheduled to start on 17 September.

He said management would use the break to resolve issues.

At Howard College, SRC president Senzo Ngidi was arrested this morning, following the arrest of more than a dozen other students yesterday.  The students appeared in court today on charges of public violence and were released on R200 bail each.

Today the Howard College campus once again came under fire when students burnt rubbish and a garden bench. Police dispersed them using rubber bullets.
