Howard College under fire

Striking students continue to disrupt lectures at UKZN and the situation has come to a head with a student allegedly shot during protests.

STUDENT protests have flared up at UKZN’s Howard College campus with reports of a building on fire and students fleeing the unrest.

According to live tweets from students on campus the area is a “war zone” and allegations that a female student has been shot.

A first year student who wished to remain anonymous, told Berea Mail she was glad she did not go to campus today as she feared for her safety. “Yesterday I went to school and they (protesting students), took us out of the lecture venues. They just came in and were harassing us. I was scared and thought it best not to go in today because security and police were threatening students with rubber bullets when I left campus and the protesting students had sticks and were hyping things up, I just wanted to get away,” she said.

UKZN’s management, are aware of the situation and will release a statement shortly.
