City water restrictions lifted

Water restrictions in eThekwini will be lifted following heavy rains which have increased dam levels.

WATER restrictions in eThekwini and surrounding areas north of Durban are to be lifted, says Umgeni Water.

According to reports, dam levels have risen over the past two months following heavy rains which has given dams adequate water to meet demands.

According to spokesman Shami Harichunder, unseasonal rainfall in July and August this year was recorded at Hazelmere Dam which amounted to about 180mm. The below-average rainfall in KZN over the past two years had caused major dams recording lower levels than previously. The dam is currently 62 per cent full and serves eThekwini, iLembe District and areas north of Durban including La Mercy, Verulam and Ballito.

Harichunder said the plant would go back to supplying full demand to customers and all planned interruptions of supply to those areas north of Durban had been stopped on 1 September. Individual water restrictions in these areas are also to be removed.

He advised consumers to continue to use water sparingly, adding that levels at Midmar, Albert Falls and Nagle dams had not improved.
