Motorists warned of N3 road closures

Motorists are warned of road closures on the N3 at the Hammarsdale interchange.

PART of the N3 near the Hammarsdale interchange will be closed as the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) and eThekwini Municipality carry out upgrading operations at the interchange.

The construction work commenced in May 2016 and will continue until November 2018. The works comprise construction of a new bridge over the N3 as well as new interchange ramps. These are required to cater for current and future predicted traffic as well as future widening of the N3. In addition, sections of the road between Hammarsdale and Cato Ridge (MR385) and Meadway Road will also be widened.

The construction works will necessitate blasting of hard rock in some of the cuttings. For the safety of the travelling public, residents in the adjacent properties, as well as pets and livestock, both carriageways of the N3 and the local roads adjacent to the site will be closed during the blasting operations.

The road closures will be for a period of 1 hour, generally between 3pm and 4pm.

Signboards will be erected to warn travelling public of the date and time of the road closures, which are likely to commence from Thursday 1 September 2016. However, the blasting date and time may need to be adjusted and the new date and time will be made public.

The alternative route between Pietermaritzburg and Durban (which will remain open) is the R103.

Travellers will be directed off the N3 at Cato Ridge and allowed to join again at Shongweni.

SANRAL apologises to the motoring public for any inconvenience caused and thanks them for their patience during road construction.
