Berea police mourn the loss of W/O DH Makhanya, who was one of the station's experienced crime fighters.

BEREA police are mourning the loss of one of its own.

According to Captain PN Naidoo, communications officer at Berea police, Warrant Officer DH Makhanya (53) died on 13 August after a short illness. The station held a memorial service in his honour at Munnies Hockey grounds last Thursday.

“It is a loss of our brother in police but we want to remember the good times we shared together,” Naidoo.

Makhanya joined the police services in 1987, stationed at Durban Central and did his police training in Hammanskraal. After his training, he was transferred to crime intelligence at Empangeni before joining Berea Police Station in 1989 where he remained and was promoted to Sergeant in 1995 and in 1999 to a Warrant Officer.

“He was very instrumental in the fight against crime because he was one of the few members identified to work in the crime prevention unit. He was a very good field worker and he made a lot of arrests for serious crimes as well as prevented crimes from taking place whilst performing his duties. He completed all the courses that he attended successfully. Some of the courses he completed were Street Survival, Crime Prevention and the SWAT so his experience is also a loss to the station,” added Naidoo.
