SOB calls for police to act swiftly in park murder

Local civil action group Save Our Berea are outraged by the brutal murder and mutilation of a woman at Edith Benson Park and call for more visible policing in the area.

SAVE Our Berea, a Berea’s civic organisation has called on police to “swiftly apprehend” the killer of the woman who was found brutally murdered, mutilated and dumped at Edith Benson Park recently.

“We are appalled and saddened by this horrific killing. Our green spaces are there for all to use and enjoy but they have become the hunting grounds of the desperate and dangerous. Berea SAPS must act swiftly to apprehend the killer or killers. We need more visible policing especially at night,” the organisation’s Cheryl Johnson and Kevin Dunkley said.

Noting that the murder was not the first time a woman has been murdered in a park on the Berea, Johnson added, “The fact is women are still extremely vulnerable in public places and this must change.”

Meanwhile, Captain PN Naiddo communications officer at Berea SAPS told Berea Mail, according to Detective Sergeant ET Gabayi, the investigating officer for the murder, the deceased woman was an African female about 30-years-old and was found covered in a grey jacket. “She does not have any distinguishing marks on her body. To date no one as come to identify her. It is unknown where she lived and who her friends or family were thus making it extremely difficult to identify,” explained Naidoo.

Anyone with any information or who might be able to identify the woman is urged to contact the Det/Sgt Gabayi on 031 3122345.
