Parks takes action after residents complain

The municipality's Parks Department will be working on sprucing up Jameson Park following complaints by residents and the ward councillor.

THE Parks Department has been tasked to address concerns raised by residents and the ward councillor regarding the condition of Jameson and Mitchell Parks in Morningside.

According to eThekwini Head of the Communications Unit, Tozi Mthethwa, the complaint regarding the condition of the parks has been brought to the attention of the relevant Unit, and park management has also been tasked to address the concerns raised.

“Drought is a serious issue and to save water the city is limited to the amount of watering we can undertake. In view of the drought, alternate indigenous plants will be planted in the flowerbeds. However, blatant disregard for the environment appears to be the cause of the litter problem. So much of the waste we see being washed up on the shore along our coastline, is plastic and debris that can be recycled,” she said.

She said the litter that is often found washed up on the city’s beaches after heavy rains does not only affect marine life but the litter along the beaches and waterways also destroy the beauty and enjoyment of those areas.

“While the city makes every effort to keep our city clean, there is no amount of cleaning and policing that can deal with litter if we, as residents, do not change our behaviour on waste management. Pollution and environmental degradation is one of our biggest challenges. Furthermore, pollution caused by the inappropriate disposal of waste can also cause health problems. We urge residents to be champions of change and to stop littering. This will address many of our environmental challenges,” she said.
