AT least 75 Grade eight pupils from Maris Stella paid a visit to the GO!Durban project office last week to meet the team that are designing and implementing the city’s new integrated rapid public transport network system..
The learners, who were on assignment to research a project for their Geography syllabus, were given a presentation on the full GO!Durban programme which will network the city from east to west and north to south with a series of dedicated bus lanes, feeder and complementary bus routes and non-motorised transport pedestrian walkways, cycle lanes and pedestrian bridges, as well as an upgraded train service from KwaMashu to the CBD to transport close to 600 000 people each day.
According to Shoneeze Franks, manager of transport promotions and media at the eThekweni Transport Authority, the learners were “fabulously up to speed on what public transport means for a city,” and they were “delightfully engaging – asking so
many questions about the future of public transport for Durban, and how we were all going to benefit from the new system.”
