Durban tremor measured

The Council for Geoscience has measured last night's tremor and pinpointed its origin.

DURBAN people are divided into two groups, those who did and those who didn’t!  Last night’s earth tremor, which shook parts of Durban, Pietermaritzburg and was felt as far afield as Richmond and Illovo, has enjoyed much attention on social media platforms with those who felt it describing their experiences and those who didn’t, questioning if it happened at all.

According to the Council for Geoscience, as reported in the media today, the 4.1 magnitude tremor originated near the Matatiele-Lesotho border, but the seismic event was also felt in Durban and surrounding areas. It has not yet been established how far the tremor went.

Earth tremor rattles Durban

A spokesperson for the Council for Geoscience said people who found themselves right next to the earthquake that measured over a 3.5 magnitude could expect to find minor damage.

Some people described how doors rattled and light fittings swung while the tremor, which only lasted about 7 seconds, made itself felt.

Earlier this year Durban was also struck by a tremor which reportedly measured 3.1 in magnitude.
