Striking Telkom staff march through CBD

Telkom staff marched through the streets of Durban CBD and declared an indefinite strike.

MORE than a hundred telecommunication staff mainly from Telkom gathered at King Dinuzulu Park this morning before marching through the streets of Durban in protest.

Protesting workers held placards and marched, singing and toyi-toying down Anton Lembede (Smith) street to City hall where they planned to hand over a memorandum of their grievances.

Thami Mzileni, KZN secretary of the Communications Workers Union, said the strike action came after last week’s picket on 2 August. “This is a Telkom workers strike, last week we picketed outside the Centrex building and embarked on a go-slow,  but from today, we are not going to report for duty until our demands are met!”

Mzileni said the public can expect delays and disruptions of Telkom phone,  data and landlines because technicians and service call centre workers would be on strike. “This is a 100 per cent shutdown and an indefinite strike. we are fighting for the workers who are outsourced,” he added.
