Night water restrictions hit Durban

eThekwini municipality have advised that residents must expect night water restrictions as soon as this evening in order to conserve dwindling water supply.

DURBANITES are in for a serious life adjustment when eThekwini begins its new planned night water restrictions from this afternoon.

eThekwini’s head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa said as a result of the persistent drought in the province, eThekwini municipality would reduce the supply of potable water to all affected areas in order to prolong the available storage of water and ensure that taps don’t run dry.

“In order to stabilise the water at the Wiggins supply system, the city is currently installing water restrictors, reducing the flow and pressure and implementing planned restrictions to all affected properties,” explained Mthetwa.

Water restrictions will start tonight, (Thursday, 11 August) from 9pm to 4am every day. The following areas will be affected: Morningside, Springfield, Springfield Flats, Beachwood, Stamford Hill, Windermere, Sydenham, Sherwood, Bonela, Sparks, Essenwood, North Beach, Musgrave, Greyville, Old Fort, South Beach, Warwick, Westridge, Blackhurst, Wiggins, Ridgeview, Bulwer, City- Centre, Esplanade, Congela, Habour Point, Cave Rock, Island View, UKZN University, Cato Manor, Part Bellair, Carrington Heights, Bellair, Umbilo, Bayhead.

The frequent draining and filling of the water supply system has resulted in prolonged interruptions to our customers (mainly in higher lying areas) as well as repeated bursts to the water mains.

According to Mthethwa the city’s interventions will help to stabilise the water supply system and control the outflow from the reservoirs. “Our intention is to provide customers with an uninterrupted supply once we have reached the desired water savings of five per cent.

“The City urges residents and businesses to continue using water sparingly and adopt internal water saving and re-use techniques. With your help, the Municipality will be able to conserve and prolong our dwindling water reserves,” Mthethwa added.

Residents are reminded to report water leaks on 080 13 13 013 or sms 43554 or email: eservices@durban.gov.za
