GALLERY: Slow start but voting goes smoothly on the Berea

Voting on the Berea appears to be running smoothly with only some early morning delays reported.

WHILE some early bird voters had a slight delay to making their mark at two schools in Umbilo on Wednesday morning, it was smooth sailing for the rest of the wards on the Berea.

Berea Mail was alerted to delays at Brettenwood and Port Natal High schools on Wednesday morning when a community leader reported that there were reports of no ink and ballot papers at Brettonwood High School, which apparently also extended to other polling stations in Umbilo. At Port Natal polling station, one resident reported that there had been a delay in opening.

Gary Wilkinson and Christina Dutton had a short delay at Port Natal High School. “We wanted to avoid the queues but had to wait for ballots. I’m glad its over, we promised the kids a day of fishing,” he added.

Presiding IEC officer at Port Natal, Manqba Sikhakhane, told Berea Mail, there was only a slight delay. “We just had to wait for the arrival of sensitive material, it was only 30 minutes,” he added.

Glenwood early bird voters, mum and daughter Protea Meyer and Helena Koen got into the Stella Sports Club queue at 6.15am to avoid the rush but there was already a snaking queue. “I guess people are excited to vote,” she said proudly holding up her inked thumb.
